People who drive by too quickly will miss the statue of the loyal little dog who gave her life in order to be true to her unit. A little advice to visitors driving by the 11th PA monument: Many of her visitors leave a flag, coin or biscuit as a gift for her. Some, like members of the Westmoreland County PA Historical Society home county of the 11th commanding officer, Richard Coulter , even have their photo taken with her as a special souvenir.

The reenacting you do is important in carrying on the story of what happened during the Civil War. These dogs have gotten a bad reputation over the years for the ways that man has used them for i. But through the efforts of many Americans who realize that man is the reason they have gotten this bad rap there are many people today that dedicate their time,effort,and money to reverse this opinion of these dogs who by the way are one of the top breeds of dogs noted for loyalty and love for man.

Many of these dogs that were used for fighting have been able to be rescued and even adopted by families which shows that even after being badly mistreated can turn the other cheek and still be loyal,loving pets even after what man has used them for. Pfeif's unit with their new rifles and Pfeif's dog. Checking her sources for this photograph proved useless because they were too general and vague.

I finally did locate the photograph. It is a photograph of the 71st Illinois Color Guard unit.

Pfeif was in Company F of the 58th Illinois Infantry regiment. So she is incorrect in identifying this photograph.

As a librarian, I would strongly suggest finding additional sources before using the information in this publication as a reference. Fact checking is the base for all nonfiction works! Many short stories of various dogs that accompanied men and women during campaigns of the War. Few are memorialized like Sallie of the 11th Pennsylvania on the monument at Gettysburg, but all brought comfort to their humans.

I love this book because it is can be for dog lovers or civil war buffs. I didn't know much about the civil war before reading this book, but I know a lot more now. If you love dogs, you will love reading about how these dogs were treated and the jobs they had. It is interesting to see the similarities between civil war dogs and dogs of today. One person found this helpful. Anne is a writer and Civil War historian of unmatched integrity. This book is for dog lovers, but also for anyone who wants to learn more about the Civil War and gain insight into some fascinating personal stories about the soldiers and how their relationship with their 'dogs of war'.

It arived earlyer than expected. My 11 year old daughter started reading it and I started once she fell asleep, Great Book!!! I am a huge fan of Anne's work and this book is just another example of her expertise and fantastic writing. A book worth reading, especially for civil war buffs and animal lovers.
